NOVERDY FRENCH ART DECO CEILING LIGHT lamp pendant chandelier 1930 muller era
A wonderful French 1930 art deco ceiling light in nickel plated bronze or solid brass holding a very rare shade in acid etched glass signed Noverdy. Art deco lamp shades in deep, acid engraved glass of high quality were produced by Daum and Delatte but also by Noverdy. They are very hard to find yet an excellent alternative for the very expensive Daum shades. The semi-flush mount ceiling fixture has a total drop of 25 cm (9-27/32″) and glass globe has a diameter of 18,2 cm (7-11/64″). It is in excellent condition. I have renickeled and patinated the fixture. The lamp comes newly wired. It now holds a European E14 socket. I will rewire it for the US Canada or Japan with an american candelabra base one. NOVERDY – Verrerie des Vosges : René & Jean Drouhot. A glass factory in the Moselle based villages of Hoffmuhl and Lutzelbourg. In 1925 Jean and René Drouot also took over the société anonyme des Verreries de Dijon. Which was a glass factory founded in 1893 producing tableware. They renamed it Nouvelles Verreries de Dijon. The lamp shades that were produced in their plants are often unsigned. Sometimes signed Noverdy (for Nouvelles Verreries de Dijon). And a few models were signed Verrerie des Vosges. Sometimes we can see the signature Noverdi on acid-engraved bowls or vases. In 1928 a certain monsieur Jean Noverdy won a price at an exhibition. The home address of this price winning fantasy figure was the house of Jean Drouhot. For the rest there is not one file or register where the name (jean) Noverdy shows up. Check out over 400 other French art deco lamps in my shop. French lamps and wiring. Art deco lamps made in France were equiped with B22 bayonet sockets. For most countries like Europe or the US such sockets are practicaly impossible to use. For instance in the States 110 volt bulbs with B22 fitters are obscure, very hard to find and only one model bulb in very limited wattages is available. In spite of what sellers of unrestored pieces of poor quality claim in their ads when they offer lamps with bayonet caps sockets : except for the UK and Australia French chandeliers and lamps need to be rewired for your country. In order to fit Edison large or small screw base bulbs as used in the USA, B22 sockets have to be replaced by American candelabra base or standard/medium size Edison screw-in sockets. E14 and E27 are modern replacements for European countries. An additional complication is that the size thread used in early French lighting to connect the sockets to the chandelier mountings or lamp bases is not compatible with the modern size threads used in the USA and Europe. New American or European sockets do not just screw on to the old lamp fixtures. In order to make it possible to use an original old French chandelier or lamp with modern screw bulb bases, a specialized restorer will have to re-tap the threads. All my cleaned and restored chandeliers, sconces and lamps come rewired with the correct sockets you will need to use modern bulbs in your country.
