Table Lamp MCM Bubble Light, George Nelson, ca 1950s Art Deco Home Lighting
George Nelson was truly one of the founders of American Modernism; while Director of Design for Herman Miller, he designed his iconic Bubble Lights, the most popular of which was this flying saucer shaped table lamp. I can find no flaws other than a bit of age appropriate discoloration but which is barely discernible when either lit or unlit. The bottom frame bears a sticker: Bubble Light Fixtures, Patent Applied For, Howard Miller Clock Company, Zeeland, Michigan. This light is made of a self-webbing plastic that was incorporated by Nelson from military use. It measures approximately 24″ high 12″ wide it looks to have its original wiring which is in excellent condition. Please be sure to note the mellow color of the shade, both lit and unlit and the fine “ribbing” on the shade which is so beautifully accented when the lit.
