Authentique veilleuse des années 30 présentée au catalogue d’époque du fabricant (photo 6). Rare veilleuse en laiton estampé nickelé et globe à facettes « piquants » par Jean Balthazard, fabricant de bronzes d’éclairage à Paris durant les années 20 et 30. On retrouve ce modèle à l’identique sur sa feuille de lustrerie n°7 avec la référence 207 (photo 6). Cette veilleuse, dont toutes les pièces sont d’origine, est en parfait état de conservation. Elle mesure 19 cm de hauteur et pèse 0,850 gr. Le bâtiment, aujourd’hui disparu, abritait notamment les établissements Duchez, une vieille fabrique de bronzes d’art et de fantaisie créée au 19e siècle. On y trouvait également le ciseleur Vatrin et le graveur sur métaux Prot, toute une confrérie d’artisans du bronze qui ouvraient alors en synergie. Décoré de la croix de guerre pour son ingéniosité et son sang-froid durant le premier conflit mondial, Jean Balthazard devint monteur en bronze et ouvrira en 1922 sa société de bronzes d’éclairage. Après la seconde guerre mondiale, il quittera le métier et rejoindra le CNRS comme régisseur des dépenses aux laboratoires de Bellevue où il recevra d’ailleurs les palmes académiques. Pour équiper ses luminaires, Balthazard se fournissait auprès de la Verrerie d’Ezanville de Gauthier EJG, J. Robert, ainsi que celle des Andelys (Hanots). Il utilisait également de nombreuses verreries gravées, dont l’origine demeure inconnue, ainsi que des modèles des cristalleries de Bohème. Le support hexagonal en laiton nickelé est réalisé par impression d’empreinte (estampage), un procédé alors peu répandu et moins onéreux que le moulage. Le décor géométrique est en relief, la frise qui contourne le col est ajourée, les trois vis qui maintiennent la verrerie sont d’origine. Ce support ne comporte aucun manque, il est en très bon état. La boule à piquants est d’origine tchécoslovaque, comme un grand nombre de verreries utilisées à cette époque par les fabricants français d’appareils d’éclairage. Elle est réalisée en verre blanc dépoli avec de larges lignes en réserve claire sur la totalité de ses arrêtes et de ses creux (selon le procédé de dépolissage Helio). Hormis quelques égrenures d’usage à son col (non visibles), cette boule est en très bon état de conservation. La veilleuse est équipée d’une douille en laiton nickelé à baïonnette B22 (une ampoule LED neuve sera fournie). Elle a été électrifiée avec un fil neuf. Looks like it has had a new cord attached but the plug looks old, so it could be original. Some corrosion to the metal – I have tried to show the areas. I have not attempted to do any cleaning to the lamp. UPDATE: The lamp works but the on/off switch does not. The switch, at the front of the base, will turn but the lamp is permanently on and the switch will not turn it off.
