Vintage JOSEPH LUCAS machine age GLOBE lamp BAKELITE Modernist ART DECO 1930
FOR SALE here is one RARE JOSEPH LUCAS TABLE LAMP from1930. This lamp was manufactured in the JOSEPH LUCAS WORKS, BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND from materials used by their suppliers (SMITHS : bakelite clocks/dashboards; CHROME plate : from the many chrome auto parts they made themselves and white cased glass GLOBES from the firm HAILWAY who produced the petrol pump glass globes for Shell Petroleum back then). The semi spherical base is made from black BAKELITE with two thin rings of chrome set in around its base and a Saturn like chromium plated flat ring supported by three fins within which a white encased glass globe revolves freely whilst supported on the lamp light source profile, remaining invisible. All clever marketing by the greatest automotive and aeronautical engineering company in BRITAIN in its day. The base of the lamp sits on a aluminium covering to the wiring, moulded with that wonderful LUCAS Logo and the words DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED IN OUR OWN WORKS, JOSEPH LUCAS LTD, ENGLAND. The cover is held in place by a rubber seal which act then as a table top protector. The lamp bulb fitting is British GEC tungsten. The HERITAGE of HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS and PRODUCTION, ARE RIGHT HERE IN THIS UNIQUE AND RARE LAMP OF LIMITED NUMBERS, FOR ALL TO SEE! Condition: No cracks or chips or restoration although there is a wearing to brass on the chrome slightly at the join of fins with underneath of the ring (the point at which it would be lifted) but hardly noticeable. Free from damp and smoke for 88 years. A good JAZZ AGE investment. The approx measurements are. Total height of lamp : 40cm. 12 3/4 dia across chrome rim. 9 3/4 dia across bakelite base. 3 1/4 depth of bakelite base. 3 1/4 depth of chrome rim at its lowest point. 6 1/2 depth of chrome rim at its highest point. The bulb is a Crompton 15w tungstun 240V (warm white) but it is likely there in now a LED retrofit available. The new smooth dull gold 3 metre long three core cable is fixed and earthed within the rubber base, complete with rocker switch. I will include an vintage MK bakelite fused three pin British plug.
