RARE Gerda Gerdago Art Deco Winged Dancer Lamp Alabaster Base Harlequin Pixie
RARE 1930’S GERDA GERDAGO WINGED DANCER LAMP WITH ALABASTER BASE. The top portion of the lamp is a metal sculpture of a winged dancer designed by Austrian artist Gerda Gerdago. The bottom portion is made of thick walled alabaster stone that has an etched drapery pattern along the sides. The base is hollow and has a bulb inside (see last photo). The sculpture portion of the lamp is generally attributed to having been forged at the J. Hirsch Foundry in Manhattan, New York during the 1930’s. Hirsch described the metal as “French Bronze”, which was actually a spelter material. Other sellers have described the head of this lamp as being made of ivorine (imitation ivory), but I believe it to be metal that is painted an ivory color. The rest of the lamp is painted a turquoise color. The lamp stands about 15 5/8 tall. The figural portion is 10 1/4″ tall and the base is approximately 5 3/8″ tall and 5 1/8 in diameter. Gerdago was an Austrian artist and sculptor who created costumes for many notable theatrical productions, films, and ballets during her lifetime. She first pursued her art studies in Berlin in 1927, then later in Paris during 1928-29. She designed numerous Art Deco style statuettes, often in the form of dancers, harlequins, or pixies. Condition of this Gerdago winged dancer lamp is EXCELLENT. The paint is mostly intact with just a few minor nicks. The alabaster base is also in nice shape and the light works. The vintage cord is in functional condition. Overall, this scarce lamp looks great and displays beautifully. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself.
