Exquisite 1930s German Art Deco Crystal Glass Swallows Lamp by Walther & Sohne
(Swallows)is one of the more desirable glass pattern-types produced by Walther & Sohne in Germany during the Art Deco period. It was produced in one size only and in a variety of colours as a stand-alone item of interior display, or as a central component for a centrepiece set, using a variety of different bowl patterns. Walther also produced several lamps, some of which were adapted from existing candlestick patterns or from the bases of two-piece comports, and most of these items were adapted out of house by the retailers of the day. A variety of Black glass stands were also produced as was the base for this piece. Walther & Sohne had the foresight to produce a same-sized & patterned flower-frog with which customers could use to hold various figurines & sculptures of the same base-size diameter and height, and as the lamp base of this piece also has the same-sized internal top diameter, it too can accommodate a wide variety of Walther glass ladies for example or several other animal & bird figurines to suit the mood. However, the neutral colour of this example of Schwalben, is not only scarce & desirable, it also blends in within any interior setting wherever it is suitably displayed. All the electrical fixtures & fittings are original and are still in excellent working order. The wire flex, the on/off switch and the two-pin plug are all of German origin. The glass figurine is free from any damage in the slightest, and its decorative mouldings are crisply defined. The top of the lamp base has several nicks however these are completely disguised by the figurine when the lamp is displayed as intended. I would urge you not to allow this lamp to pass you by. You will not find another, I assure you. Its a wonderful piece from the 1930s and it has an eye-catching appeal that is timeless. Total Height: 22cm – 8.5ins. Base diameter: 13cm – 5ins.
